It is a matter of great pleasure when any Indian wins a Nobel prize in any field. Sadly our country doesn’t have the potential to recognize talent. What is more unfortunate is that our country hardly provides the infrastructure to these brilliant minds.

Politicians are least qualified to express their views on scientists of international repute. It is because of their tardiness in improving our infrastructure and education system that we lose so many highly qualified individuals to foreign universities and research organisations.
Venkataraman Ramakrishnan is a case in point. Nobody remembers him being an exceptional student in his days in India, but given the right opportunities and facilities in the US, his talent came to the fore. He showed that given the right environment, exceptional work is possible. This is what our politicians need to work towards.
The tidal wave of affection from Ramakrishnan’s fellow Tamils and Indians reflects the goodwill of the people who see him as one of their own. To spurn this is neither graceful nor indicative of strong character. Greatness is earned by grace.
