The Indian state has allowed the Naxalite problem to fester for far too long. The politics of various parties has also worsened the situation. From killing innocent people and sabotaging railway tracks, the Naxalites have now graduated to taking an entire train hostage. Anyone who breaks the law, whatever his motivation may be, must pay the price. If the Naxalites wish to have a voice in this country, they must play by the rules of our constitutional democracy. The government should not allow politics to meddle with the proposed biggest-ever security operation against them. But it must also focus on development of the Naxal-affected regions simultaneously.

The so-called intellectuals like Arundhati Roy are justifying and supporting the anarchy spread by the Maoists and their tactics of terrorism. Admittedly, there is much that is wrong with the Indian democracy. But the remedy is not to take to arms and destroy the existing political structure. Suppose the Maoists were to succeed in overthrowing the current system. What form of government will they install? In all likelihood, it will be along the lines of the Chinese government. Such a government would not bother about niceties like human rights and tribals’ rights to forests and mines. Instead of corrupt politicians and bureaucrats, we would have even more corrupt Maoist party members. Is this what Roy and her ilk want?
